11/10/2008 | Rifle
OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss rifle team defeated UTEP over the weekend at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford. The two squads tied with a team aggregate score of 4584, but the Rebels won out in a tie-breaker.
With both teams tied in the aggregate score, the stalemate was broken by using the last 10-shot string for both the smallbore and the air rifle of the scoring team members.
The Rebels were led by junior Colleen Tillson and freshman Keely Stankey, who both fired career-highs in the air rifle. Tillson fired a 582 and Stankey turned in a 585. Other scores on the Ole Miss air rifle line were Erica Swanson (581), Jessica Hornby (579) and Meredith Holman (575).
In the smallbore sophomore Stacie Leatherman fired a career-high of 570 to pace the Rebels. Stankey and Tillson both turned in a score of 569, while Hornby and Holman rounded out the line with scores of 566 and 560, respectively.
“This is by far the best match we have had all year in terms of team performance,” said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe. “We had three personal bests and I'm very proud of how the entire team performed. We have had some excellent practices lately and it really showed.”
Next up, Ole Miss travels to Murray State on Nov. 21 for the last match of the semester.
