Three Soccer Rebels Named All-SEC

11/4/2008 | Soccer

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. As they prepare for the Southeastern Conference Tournament, three Ole Miss soccer players have been named All-SEC, the league announced Tuesday. Junior defender Danielle Johnson was voted to the first team by the league coaches, while senior midfielders Christine Breaux and Jennifer Hance were second-team selections.

A native of Baton Rouge, La., Johnson earns All-SEC accolades for the third straight season and first-team honors for the second year in a row. Anchoring the Rebel back line, she has started and played every minute of all 19 matches this season. She has scored a goal and provided three assists this season, as well.

The Ole Miss team leader in goals (7), assists (5) and points (19), Hance also receives All-SEC accolades for the third time in her career. The Sugar Land, Texas, native was a first-team selection her freshman year in 2005 and a second-team pick in 2006. She and Johnson become the fourth and fifth Ole Miss players to receive All-SEC three times, including Jennifer Soileau (1997-2000), Kristin Chapman (2000-02) and Kristal Menard (2001-04).

Breaux earns All-SEC honors for the first time in her career. The Gonzales, La., native has started all 80 matches in her Rebel career and is a dominant defensive force both in the backfield and midfield. She also serves as one of the Rebels’ two team captains.

Ole Miss now has produced 27 All-SEC selections since 1996, all under Steve Holeman, the only head coach in school history.

Florida head coach Becky Burleigh was named SEC Coach of the Year, Auburn goalkeeper Allison Whitworth earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, LSU’s Malorie Rutledge was named SEC Offensive Player of the Year, Georgia defender Megan Tomlinson is SEC Defensive Player of the Year and Auburn freshman Katy Frierson garnered SEC Freshman of the Year accolades.
