Lady Rebel Netters Down Southern University; Host Troy Sunday

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women’s tennis team evened its record to 2-2 Friday, by sweeping Southern University 7-0 at the Ole Miss won the doubles point in convincing fashion and never looked back. The Lady Rebels only dropped two games in the doubles. Senior Nika Koukhartchouk lost only one game all day in both singles and doubles, shutting out her singles opponent, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. With the win, she improved to 3-1 at No. 1 singles. Freshman Karen Nijssen made it 3-0 with her straight set (6-2, 6-1) win over Southern’s Janelle Mosley at No. 2 singles. Nijssen remained undefeated (4-0) at No. 2 singles and is now 7-1 combined in singles and doubles. Laura van de Stroet, another freshman, started off slow in her match, to last year’s SWAC Freshman of the Year, Megan Wiltz, losing the first set 6-2. van de Stroet rebounded nicely to claim the second and third sets 6-1, 6-3, respectively, to clinch the victory. “It was good to get back on the winning side,” head coach Mark Beyers said. “We were able to work on some things during the match that we had been doing in practice to help us improve and get ready for Sunday. Now we’ll see if we can make it two in a row. Ole Miss also picked up straight-set wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles with Soledad Podlipnik and Yana Kireeva, to add to the overall score. At No. 6 the two elected to play an eight-game pro set since the overall match was already decided when they took the court. Mimi Renaudin won the set 8-1 for the final point of the day.
