Rebel Rifle Wins NCAA Sectional

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss Rebel rifle team won the NCAA Sectional over the weekend at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford. Now the Rebels await bids for individual entry to the NCAA Championships, which begin Mar. 14.

The Rebels posted a team aggregate score of 4556 in the victory. Ole Miss defeated Memphis (4548) and Tennessee-Martin (4464) in the sectional.

“Tensions are always higher for this match than any other, since the individuals for the NCAA Championships are solely based on this match,” said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe. “We trained really hard for this weekend and now it is just a waiting game to see what individuals will get the nod. It always feels good to walk away with a win. Now we are just going to focus on the GARC Championships.”

Senior Shannon Wilson paced the Rebels’ efforts in the air rifle. The Fairfax Station, Va. native posted a score of 585 to win individual medalist honors. Freshman Erica Swanson finished third overall with a score of 582. Corinne Hawkins (578), Jessica Hornby (578), Stacie Leatherman (573), Meredith Holman (572) and Casey Phillips (558) rounded out the Ole Miss air rifle scoring.

Wilson also finished second overall in the smallbore with a score of 570, while Hornby finished third with a score of 570. Casey Phillips (555), Stacie Leatherman (554), Meredith Holman (546), Erica Swanson (544), and Corinne Hawkins (533) all scored for Ole Miss in the smallbore.

Next up, Ole Miss will host the Great America Rifle Conference Championships for the fourth-straight year at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford on Saturday, Feb. 24.
