2/24/2008 | Rifle

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss posted an air rifle score of 2,304 Sunday to notch a fifth-place overall finish at the Great American Rifle Conference Championships, held at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford.

Senior Shannon Wilson, who claimed the smallbore title on Saturday, topped the team in air rifle with a 581 score, while junior Jessica Hornby shot a 579. Erica Swanson and Meredith Holman each turned in a 572 to round out the team aggregate.

The host Rebels concluded the competition with a composite score of 4,576 after firing a 2,272 in the smallbore in day one of the tournament.

“It’s nice to finish on a good note. This was one of our better air rifle scores this year, and overall, the team performed well this weekend,” said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe, whose program hosted the GARC Championships for the fourth straight year.

“This was one of our smoothest-run tournaments to date, and we’re excited to play host again next year.”

Led by individual air rifle medalist Stephen Scherer, Army was crowned the GARC champion with an overall score of 4,651. Kentucky finished second with a 4,633, followed by West Virginia with a 4,625.
