Weatherly Leads Rebel Soccer To Wins Over Vanderbilt, Memphis

4/14/2008 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. Sophomore forward Hannah Weatherly collected two goals and two assists to lead Ole Miss to a perfect day of exhibition soccer with 2-0 wins over Memphis and Vanderbilt on Saturday at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

The Rebels improved to 6-1-1 in their spring season and will play their final two matches of the exhibition schedule this Saturday vs. Alabama and Columbus State in Tuscaloosa.

Ole Miss has outscored its opponents 16-4 in the eight spring matches, including a 6-0 win over SEC Western Division foe Mississippi State and Saturday’s 2-0 victory over the SEC East’s Commodores.

With a tenacious defensive effort and exceptional goal scoring, head coach Steve Holeman noted that the Rebels played some of their best soccer of the spring on Saturday.

“We played very well against two quality teams from our region,” Holeman said. “I think our girls were motivated from last year’s results and wanted to prove they could play great soccer against a pair of good teams. All four of our goals were quality goals. Danielle’s goal against Vanderbilt was one of the best you’ll see.”

The Rebels started the day with a tough defensive match with Vanderbilt. After a scoreless first half, Weatherly put the Rebels ahead 1-0 with her third score of the spring. Minutes later, Weatherly controlled a ball inside the 18-yard penalty box and laid it back to Danielle Johnson, who came up with a highlight-reel score of her own. After advancing from her outside back position, the sophomore struck a 25-yarder with the outside of her right foot and bent it into the corner of the goal past the Commodore keeper for a 2-0 Rebel advantage.

Ole Miss kept the magic rolling right into the Memphis game, as Weatherly came up with a goal in the first minute of that contest on an assist from junior Stacey Emmonds. With the score 1-0 at halftime, Ole Miss added its final goal of the day off the left foot of junior midfielder Jennifer Hance in the second half. Hance took a pass from Weatherly and struck it from 25 yards out into the upper 90 of the goal.

Weatherly and Hance lead all Rebels during spring ball with four goals apiece. Freshman Taylor Cunningham has added three goals (hat trick vs. MSU), while Johnson and freshman Lily Crabtree have scored two each. Freshman Laura Hall has chipped in one goal.
