4/18/2008 | Women's Golf

LOUDON, Tenn. The Ole Miss women’s golf team, led by junior Dori Carter stands in seventh place after the first round of the SEC Championship Friday, at the Tennessee National Golf Club.

Carter, fired a 1-under 71 and is tied for second in the individual field.  The Valdosta, Ga., native started on the 10th tee and bogeyed No. 13 (her third hole).   She got it back to even on the next hole with a birdie before finishing her front nine at +1.  Carter finished strong with three birdies on the back nine, including her last two holes (Nos. 8 and 9).  On 18 she knocked it to four feet and tapped in for birdie.

Arkansas’ Stacy Lewis shot a 3-under 69 to lead Carter and Georgia’s Krystle Caithness by two.

The Lady Rebels carded a 309 and are two shots back of fifth-place Alabama (307) and one ahead of LSU (310) and Auburn (310).  Arkansas and Florida are tied for first at 297.  Georgia and South Carolina are tied for third at 300.

“The conditions were really tough and windy,” head coach Michele Drinkard said.  “Short game became a premium, putting your ball in the right place and trying to make par.   Dori played great.  She put her golf ball in the right places on the greens and used her putting and her short game to her advantage.

“We are pleased with our position under these conditions, and with the strength of the field we have in the SEC.  Our gameplan for tomorrow will be to hit as many greens as we can and rely on our short game.”

Sophomore Sara Grantham turned in a 75 and is tied for 14th.    Freshman Jillian Brodd finished with a 79, and junior Rachel Ingram tallied an 84 to finish out the Lady Rebel scoring.

Due to expected overnight rains, the tee times for Saturday’s second round have been pushed back.  The Lady Rebels will go off beginning at 10:50 a.m. CT.
