Holeman Announces Rebels? First Ever Swedish Soccer Signee

4/22/2008 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. This fall’s Ole Miss soccer team will include the program’s first ever Swedish member following the signing of Sofia Lindell to a national letter of intent, head coach Steve Holeman announced Tuesday.

A 5-foot-7 forward from Vrmd, Sweden, Lindell helped her Hammarby DFF club team win the 2006 Swedish Division 2 title before moving on to her current team, Enskede. As a student at Frans Schartaus Gymnasium, she helped her school to the Swedish National Schools Championship in 2006 and another finals appearance in 2007. She has also participated with a select group of Swedish girls against teams from other countries in the World Cup Gothia and advanced to the semifinals in 2006.

“We are excited to have our first player from Sweden,” Holeman said. “Sofia is a talented front runner who will add another dimension to our attack. Her exceptional pace and ability to score goals will help her contribute right away. Sofia can play well with her back to goal and also use her speed to get in behind. She has a very bright future and we look forward to her becoming an Ole Miss Rebel.”

A good student, Lindell has excelled in the classroom with concentrations in business and marketing. As a member of the student exchange program at her school, she has also studied in Italy. The all-around athlete has participated in track and golf, while having served as a soccer referee and coach for younger kids in her hometown of Vrmd, which is just outside of the Swedish capital of Stockholm.

In addition to being the first Ole Miss soccer signee from Sweden, Lindell is the third player in program history to hail from Europe, joining current junior Stacey Emmonds (Mirfield, England) and former Rebel goalkeeper Birna Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland).

Lindell is the eighth member of the Rebels’ 2008 class, which includes Katie and Kelsey Breathitt (Lexington, Ky.), Abbie Curran (Eagle, Idaho), Rachel Cutts (Pace, Fla.), Alley Ronaldi (The Woodlands, Texas), Meredith Snow (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jenna Strother (Auburn, Ala.).

The incoming class will help replace six graduating seniors from a Rebel squad that returns 15 letterwinners and nine of 11 starters off last year’s team.
