Former Rebel Netter Wins First Olympic Match

8/12/2008 | Men's Tennis

BEIJING Former Ole Miss tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi cleared his first hurdle toward winning an Olympic medal Tuesday, teaming with his countryman Leander Paes to win their rain-delayed first round doubles match at the Olympic Green Tennis Center. In just 57 minutes, the pair downed Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 6-3.

The Indian duo never faced a break point and converted on three of their four break point opportunities to secure the easy victory. Bhupathi, the 1995 NCAA Doubles Champion, and Paes, will face Andre Sa and Marcelo Melo of Brazil in the second round Wednesday.

This is the third Olympics Bhupathi and Paes have competed in together as they try to erase the disappointment of narrowly missing a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
