Soccer Coaches Pick Rebels To Finish Third In SEC West

8/14/2008 | Soccer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Following a third-place finish in the SEC Western Division a year ago, the Southeastern Conference soccer coaches picked Ole Miss to repeat in that position this season, in a poll released by the league office Thursday.

The Rebels received 45 points, compared to defending division champion LSU with 62 and second-place Auburn with 59. LSU was picked to edge Auburn in the division title race with seven first-place votes to five. Alabama (30), Arkansas (30) and Mississippi State (20) rounded out the SEC West order.

Florida was picked to defend its eastern division title, receiving 59 total points and seven first-place votes, ahead of Tennessee’s 55 points and three first-place votes. Georgia received 52 points and two first-place votes, while South Carolina (37), Vanderbilt (23) and Kentucky (20) rounded out the East order.

The Gators also earned seven first-place votes as the coaches’ choice to defend their SEC overall title. The Lady Vols received three first-place votes and the Bulldogs from Athens two.

Points were compiled on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division, though each coach was not allowed to vote for their own team. Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

Ole Miss’ third-place finish in the division last season marked just the second time it has finished out of the top two since 2002. The Rebels look to return to the top of the heap this season as they bring back nine starters from last year, including two-time All-SEC picks Jennifer Hance and Danielle Johnson and 2007 All-SEC midfielder Amy Bayles.

An exhibition game at Ohio Valley Conference superpower Samford this Saturday precedes the Rebels’ season opener on the road at Western Kentucky Friday, Aug. 22. The 2008 home opener will be Friday, Sept. 5 against Memphis.
