INSIDER: Warren Among Elite Players At Steve Nash Skills Camp

8/3/2008 | Men's Basketball

Following his outstanding freshman season at Ole Miss, Chris Warren was one of 11 of the nation’s top college point guards invited to participate in Nike’s Steve Nash Skills Academy in Newark, N.J., earlier this summer.

Each of Nike’s Skills Academies features elite high school and college players at their position. The athletes have the opportunity to receive personal instruction from the NBA athlete along with a first-class group of coaches from all levels. Other pros hosting Nike camps include LeBron James, Vince Carter, Amare Stoudemire and Paul Pierce.

Warren shared his thoughts on being around NBA star Steve Nash and the top college players at his position.

“It was a good experience. I felt like I was among the best players in college, and that I belonged there,” said the unanimous SEC All-Freshman pick from a year ago. “We worked a lot on pick-and-roll drills and reinforcing what it takes to make it to the next level. I learned a lot about being patient and about being quick, but not in a hurry.”

The New Jersey-based camp was especially nice for Warren, who has several relatives in the area.

“A lot of my family is from New Jersey,” he said. “It was good to be up there with them. I don’t get to see that part of my family much being in Mississippi.”

Joining Warren at the Nash camp was Davidson’s Stephen Curry, South Carolina’s Devan Downey, Connecticut’s Jerome Dyson, Pittsburgh’s Levance Fields, Baylor’s Curtis Jerrells, Florida’s Jai Lucas, VCU’s Eric Maynor, Miami’s Jack McClinton, Duke’s Greg Paulus and Boston College’s Tyrese Rice.

Ole Miss will rely heavily on Warren’s talent and leadership during the upcoming season. The Rebels’ top scorer last year at 15.8 ppg, Warren and most of the backcourt return, but Ole Miss loses three-fourths of its frontcourt production with the graduation of All-SEC center Dwayne Curtis and power forwards Jermey Parnell and Kenny Williams.

However, Andy Kennedy and his staff signed a top-notch class of newcomers who look to help Warren and the Rebel program break through into the national spotlight after two straight 20-win campaigns and NIT appearances, including last season’s run to the semifinals in New York City.
