Ole Miss and TCU Battle To 2-2 Draw
8/31/2008 | Soccer
FORT WORTH, Texas Ole Miss jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first 60 minutes, but TCU battled back to hand the Rebel soccer team its second straight tie with a 2-2 final Sunday afternoon.
"The fans here at TCU saw a great soccer match today," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. "It was 110 minutes of two teams battling hard, playing very hard. There were a lot of momentum swings within the game. At the end of the day, I think a tie is a fair result. With that said, the score could have been 4-4. There were a lot of good opportunities for both teams, and both keepers made big saves."
Jennifer Hance put the Rebels (0-1-2) ahead with the first goal of the game and her second goal of the season in the 33rd minute Sunday. The senior midfielder struck from about 30 yards out for her 19th career score, but she suffered an ankle injury just a minute later and did not play the rest of the game.
With the score 1-0 in favor of the Rebels at halftime, they came out firing in the second period with junior forward Hannah Weatherly giving Ole Miss a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute. The Tupelo native scored her first goal of the season and was assisted by fellow Mississippian Mallory Coleman.
The home team would not fold, however, as TCU put together back-to-back goals within a minute of each other with just under 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Both teams produced more scoring chances, but the goalkeepers, including Ole Miss' Jackie DeNova playing her first gameof the season between the posts, made key saves to keep the score knotted at 2-2. One of those plays by DeNova was a huge save on a Horned Frog penalty kick.
"We had a great first half, and the positive to take from this game is we really battled hard and played with a lot of guts and emotion in both overtime periods," Holeman said. "We had a lot of good scoring chances and barely missed some potential game winners, but we have to learn to keep a lead."
The game was also a very physical battle, with the two teams piling up six yellow cards and a red card issued to the TCU coach.
The Rebels' third straight double-overtime game resulted in their second straight tie. Ole Miss played to five ties each of the last two seasons.
After three straight road matches, Rebel fans will finally get to see their team at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium this Friday with the home opener against Memphis slated for 7 p.m.
