9/10/2008 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. With one of the top freshman in the SEC last year returning and one of the nation’s best recruiting classes, excitement abounds for the Ole Miss women’s tennis team as they get set to kick off a new year this weekend at the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga.

The round-robin event begins Friday and concludes Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.  On Friday and Saturday, play will begin with doubles at 10 a.m. and then singles action is slated for 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. On Sunday, doubles will begin at 9 a.m. followed by singles at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The tournament features four teams that finished in the top 30 nationally in 2008, including the host Bulldogs (No. 8), Duke (No. 9), TCU (No. 26) and Indiana (No. 30). Ole Miss, Virginia and Wake Forest, round out the field.

Leading the Lady Rebels this year will be All-SEC sophomore Karen Nijssen, who is ranked No. 73 in the preseason rankings.  Junior Soledad Podlipnik and sophomore Laura van de Stroet return, as well as senior Mimi Renaudin, who received a sixth year of eligibility.

Making their debuts this weekend will be Mississippi native Kristi Boxx and Gabriela Rangel, two of the nation’s top freshmen.  Boxx, a blue-chip recruit throughout her career, was ranked in the top 25.  Rangel

The Lady Rebels also have two transfers, Connor Vogel of Germantown, Tenn., and Pippa Reakes of Bath, England.  Vogel, who transferred from Tennessee, will have to sit out this year, while Reakes, who came from North Alabama, is eligible immediately.

“We are excited about beginning the year at the Bulldog Invitational,” head coach Mark Beyers said. “There are several good teams in the field.   We’ve been practicing hard, and we are looking forward to getting out on the court in competition.”

The fall collegiate tennis season consists of round robin team action and individual tournament play. Team dual matches begin in January. The Lady Rebels will compete in the ITA All-American before hosting the Ole Miss Fall Classic (Oct. 12-14). They conclude the fall with the ITA South Regional Championships and the SEC Coaches Classic.  Ole Miss’ first team dual match will be in Oxford on Jan. 27 versus Arkansas State.
