Men's Tennis To Compete In ITA Southern Regional

10/21/2009 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team looks to continue a successful fall this weekend at the ITA Southern Regional in New Orleans, La. The tournament begins Thursday and concludes Sunday with the finals.

In August, the ITA announced a regional realignment. Beginning with this year, the regions will expand from eight to 12. In the previous alignment, the Rebels were part of the Southeast Region, which included most of the SEC and all of Florida. It was considered by many to be the toughest region in the country. Now, the Rebels are part of the Southern Region, which includes Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.

Tulane is hosting this year's Southern Regional. The winner of the singles and doubles events earns a spot in the ITA National Indoor in November.

The Rebels have combined for a 29-8 singles record this fall. Junior Tucker Vorster leads with a 9-1 record, followed by freshman Adrian Forberg Skogeng, with an 8-1 ledger. Both came within one match of reaching the main draw at the ITA D'Novo All-American Championships. Marcel Thiemann owns a 6-2 record and Chris Thiemann is 5-3.

"We've had an excellent fall so far, and we look forward to continuing it down in New Orleans," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "Even though the regions have changed, the Southern Region is still a tough one with SEC schools Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Mississippi State among the teams we will be competing against."

As part of the Southeast Region, Ole Miss won the singles title two of the last four years with former three-time All-American Erling Tveit claiming the title in 2006 and former All-American Matthias Wellermann winning it in 2007. Two-time All-American Jonas Berg reached the quarterfinals last year.
