2/16/2009 | Rifle

OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore Meredith Holman tied a school record in the air rifle as Ole Miss won its NCAA sectional qualifier over the weekend, firing a team aggregate score of 4606. Now the Rebels wait to see if they will advance to the NCAA Championships, which begin Mar. 13 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Holman led the way for the Rebels, firing a 592 in the air rifle. Her mark ties former All-American Shannon Wilson's school record. Junior Colleen Tillson also turned in an excellent score shooting a career-best 591 in the air. Ole Miss rounded out its air line with a 578 from Erica Swanson and a 573 from Jessica Hornby.

In the smallbore, Tillson and Holman once again led the way, with Tillson shooting a mark of 572 and Holman firing a 569. Freshman Keely Stankey turned in a 567 and Swanson rounded out the Rebel line with a score of 564.

"I'm ecstatic about how we shot," said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe. "Meredith and Colleen both had fantastic scores. I'm very proud of them. Now we just have to wait and see if we make nationals. We should at least have a couple of individuals."

Next up, Ole Miss will host the Great America Rifle Conference Championships beginning Feb. 27 in Oxford at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center. This is the fifth-straight year the Rebels have hosted the GARC Championships, which includes conference members Army, Kentucky, Memphis, N.C. State, Nebraska, West Virginia and Xavier.
