Rebel Soccer Kicks Off Spring Season This Weekend

2/17/2009 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. Soccer fans will soon be able to fill the void that they have been missing since the fall as Ole Miss has compiled an exciting but challenging spring schedule to prepare for the 2009 season. The lineup features matches against national powerhouses Oklahoma State and Texas, as well as home dates with Iowa and the Ole Miss Alumni.

Last season, both Oklahoma State and Texas were ranked in the top 20 with the Cowgirls going as high as No. 7 and the Longhorns finishing the season at No. 18.

The exhibition match-ups will give underclassmen a chance to improve their skills and earn playing experience. Ole Miss does not play its seniors in the spring as it prepares for the upcoming fall season. Without the seven seniors off the 2008 squad, the Rebels will go into the spring with just 12 healthy field players and two goalkeepers on the roster.

Steve Holeman’s squad will open its spring schedule this Saturday in Little Rock, Ark., taking on Oklahoma State and Arkansas State. The Rebels match up with the Cowgirls at 10 a.m. followed by the Red Wolves at 2:30 p.m.

The following Saturday the Rebels will travel to Austin, Texas, where they will compete against Texas State at 10 a.m. and Texas at 6 p.m.

After a month off, Ole Miss will travel down Interstate 55 to Ridgeland, Miss., where the Rebels will square off against Mississippi State on March 28. The contest between the in-state rivals is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

The Rebels will finally have a chance to play in front of a home crowd when they play host to Iowa on April 4 in Oxford. The contest against the Hawkeyes will start at 11 a.m.

The team will pack its bags one final time for a trip to Memphis on April 8 to take on the Tigers at 7 p.m.

Closing out the spring exhibitions is the always popular Ole Miss Soccer Alumni Weekend, highlighted by an April 18 contest when the current team squares off against a squad of former Rebel players with an 11 a.m. kickoff on that Saturday.

All home spring matches are free to the public.
