Stankey Leads Rebels On Day One At GARC Championships

2/28/2009 | Rifle

OXFORD, Miss. Led by freshman Keely Stankey, the Rebel rifle team fired a team aggregate smallbore score of 2254 and sit in fifth place after day one at the Great America Rifle Conference Championships. Ole Miss is hosting the championships at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford.

Stankey fired a team-high 573 to lead the Rebels in the smallbore potion of the championships. Sophomore Erica Swanson followed close behind Stankey with a mark of 564. Colleen Tillson and Meredith Holman closed out the Rebel smallbore line with scores of 563 and 554, respectively.

"We had some missed opportunities," said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe. "We had some solid scores but had some chances to help ourselves and we didn't. We are still in a position to post a good combined score. We just have to come out and shoot a solid air score tomorrow."

Ethan Settlemires, of Kentucky, took the overall smallbore title at the GARC championships with a mark of 680.2 and the Wildcats currently sit atop the team leader board with an aggregate of 2310.

Action at the GARC Championships will continue tomorrow at 8 a.m. with the air rifle.
