Huertas Named All-District By NABC

3/6/2009 | Men's Basketball

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Ole Miss junior guard David Huertas was named All-District by the National Association of Basketball Coaches on Thursday. The Puerto Rico native was named to the District 21 second team.

Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, the 240 student-athletes from 24 districts (which were realigned this season) are now eligible for the State Farm Coaches’ Division I All-America teams to be announced on Saturday, April 4.

Huertas is averaging a team-high 18.5 points per game this season, good for fourth among Southeastern Conference players. He is on pace for the highest scoring average by a Rebel since Justin Reed led the SEC with 18.5 ppg in 2003-04. Huertas also ranks in the league’s top five in 3-pointers per game (4th with 2.6), free-throw percentage (4th at 80.1) and 3-point field-goal percentage (5th at 35.9). He has scored 20+ points in 12 contests and double-figure points in 27-of-28 outings.

It is the fourth straight season that Ole Miss has placed a student-athlete on the NABC All-District team. Dwayne Curtis was a second-team member in 2006 and 2008, as was Todd Abernethy in 2007.

Other District 21 honorees (which includes all SEC institutions) were first-teamers Nick Calathes (Florida), Jodie Meeks (Kentucky), Devan Downey (South Carolina), Marcus Thornton (LSU) and Tyler Smith (Tennessee) as well as second-team selections Jarvis Varnado (Mississippi State), Patrick Patterson (Kentucky), Tasmin Mitchell (LSU) and Michael Washington (Arkansas).

Ole Miss closes the regular season with Mississippi State in Oxford on Saturday. Tipoff is 4 p.m. The in-state rivals will be competing for the SEC Tournament’s Western Division No. 3 seed. Either team would clinch the No. 3 seed with a win. If Ole Miss loses, it will be either the No. 4 or 5 seed depending on Alabama’s result in its season finale against Tennessee.
