6/23/2009 | Men's Tennis

LONDON Ole Miss men’s tennis player Devin Britton is preparing for the Wimbledon Junior Championships next week by playing in the AEGON International Junior Tennis Championships Roehampton, and he’s doing so in a big way.  Britton, this year’s NCAA Singles Champion, advanced to the quarterfinals in singles and doubles on Tuesday.

The Jackson, Miss., native downed Great Britian’s James Chaudry in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-0, after sending the No. 6 seed packing in straight sets on Monday.  Britton, who has not dropped a set in this tournament, will face Alessandro Bega of Italy in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

In doubles, one day after eliminating the No. 6 seed from Japan, Britton and fellow American Jordan Cox posted a straight set win over Sebastian Lavie (New Zealand)/Renzo Olivo (Argentina) to advance to the final eight.  The duo will face a team from Belarus/Hungary in the quarterfinals.

Britton became the youngest player ever and the first Rebel to win the NCAA Singles title.  He also became the first Rebel freshman to earn All-America honors.  Britton earned All-SEC honors, made the SEC All-Freshman Team and was named the 2009 ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year.
