6/24/2009 | Women's Golf

MEMPHIS, Tenn. Ashley Lance, an upcoming sophomore on the Ole Miss women’s golf team, advanced to the second round of the championship flight in match play at the Tennessee State Amateur here Wednesday at the Memphis Country Club.

A native of Franklin, Tenn., Lance’s match was never close, as she downed Debbie Durham 8&7 in a round that included five birdies on the front nine.

Lance advanced to the championship flight as one of the low 32 scorers from Tuesday’s stroke play qualifying.  Next up for Lance, will be UTC senior Kayla Stewart.

“I did really well. I’ve been waiting all year for my putts to fall, and they finally started to fall,” Lance said.  “I’ve been hitting my irons well all summer, and I was finally able to make some putts.  I kept hitting the ball close to the hole and giving myself opportunities.  I am excited about the match tomorrow. I’ve never played against her (Stewart) before, but it should be a good match.”

Rising junior Jillian Brodd also made the championship flight, but lost her match 3 & 2 to Katie Pursell.
