Grantham Advances To Match Play At U.S. Public Links
6/24/2009 | Women's Golf
DEVENS,
As of press time, several players were in a playoff to determine the final spots in the 64-match play bracket.
Golf requires you to forget about the last shot and concentrate on the next one. Grantham was able to do that after opening with a double-bogey on the first hole. She got it back to even after making birdies on four and seven. After a bogey on eight, Grantham hit it to two feet on 10 and made birdie. She stroked a nice putt on 11 for birdie to get it to 2-under. Grantham sandwiched a birdie in between bogeys on 15 and 17 to finish at 1-under 71.
“I played well today. I had five birdies and bounced back from a double-bogey,” Grantham said. “I tried to stay patient and keep hitting greens and giving myself opportunities for birdie. I had a nice rhythm going on the back side. Overall I played really solid. I was striking the ball a lot better today, and made a few nice putts.”
This marks the second tournament of the summer for Grantham to reach Championship Match Play, as she advanced to the second round of the Championship Flight in match play at the Southern Amateur earlier this month.
"Making match play here is a big deal, because this is a really good field. I came in wanting to make match play,” Grantham added. “But, I don’t want to get too far ahead. I’ve been so focused all summer on taking it one shot at a time, not thinking about the next round. My goal in match play is to beat par. I want to shoot par or better. If I lose I can look back and say I was under or right at par. I want my opponents to have to work to beat me.”
The Women’s Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted by the United States Golf Association, of which 10 are strictly for amateurs.
