Grantham Falls In Extra Holes At U.S. Public Links

6/24/2009 | Women's Golf

DEVENS, Mass. Ole Miss women’s golfer Sara Grantham played overtime on Wednesday, but couldn’t get past Korea’s Jisoo Park, falling 1-up in 21 holes in the first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at the Red Tail Golf Club.

With the match all-square through 18 holes, the two players headed back to the No. 1 tee to decide the match. Both made pars on one and birdies on two, before Park’s birdie on the par-3 third gave her the 1-up win.

The two were all-square through the first four holes of their match when Grantham birdied the par-3 fifth to go 1-up.   She remained 1-up until a bogey on the ninth and a double-bogey on the 10th gave the lead to Park for the first time in the match.

Park’s subsequent bogey on 11 squared the match and then another bogey on 14 gave Grantham the lead once again.  However, Grantham bogeyed the par-4 17th hole ultimately sending the match to extra holes.

“I made one birdie today on my first 18.  I didn’t putt well. I didn’t make the putts I needed to,” Grantham said.   “I missed a short put on two, missed another couple birdies coming in. I missed an easy up and down on nine and missed two inside 10 feet on 16 and 17.  I just couldn’t get a break today.  My score wasn’t terribly bad for 21 holes, but in match play you have to make pars and birdies.”

Grantham, a rising senior on the team, will take some time off before defending her title at the Alabama State Amateur at the end of July.
