Britton To Play For Titles In Prelude To Wimbledon

6/25/2009 | Men's Tennis

LONDON Devin Britton, a rising sophomore on the Ole Miss men’s tennis team, will play for the singles and doubles titles at the AEGON International Junior Championships Roehampton, a prelude to the Wimbledon Junior Championships.

Britton, who became the youngest winner of the NCAA Singles title in May, advanced to the singles final with a straight set win over fellow American, Alexander Domijan.   The Mississippi native won a second set tiebreaker 7-6(3) after taking the first set 6-4.  He has yet to drop a set in this event.   Friday’s final will pit Britton against the No. 10 seed, Facundo Arguello of Argentina.

The All-American and his partner, Jordan Cox, advanced to the doubles final without having to hit a ball, as their opponents Ben McLachlan and Rizi McLachlan of New Zealand defaulted.  Britton and Cox will face Pierre Hugues Herbert (France) and Stanislav Poplavskyy (Ukraine) in the final.

Following the finals at the AEGON Championship, Britton will begin play in his third grand slam junior championship as he competes in the Wimbledon Junior Championships beginning Saturday.

Britton’s busy summer continues after the Wimbledon Juniors as he travels to Porec, Croatia, to serve as a practice partner for the U.S. Davis Cup team for the 2009 Davis Cup (by BNP Paribas) quarterfinal tie, which will be played July 10-12, the USTA and U.S. Davis Cup Captain Patrick McEnroe announced this week.  Britton and Ryan Harrison of Bradenton, Fla., will train with the team during the week and will be on the bench with the players during the matches.
