Britton Captures Titles In Wimbledon Tuneup

6/26/2009 | Men's Tennis

LONDON Ole Miss men’s tennis player Devin Britton won the AEGON International Junior Championships singles and doubles titles here Friday, closing out a successful prelude to Wimbledon Juniors, which begins Saturday.

In the singles final, Britton dropped his first set in the tournament, but like so many other times, he rallied against Argentina’s Facundo Arguello.   After Arguello won the first set 7-5, Britton, a native of Jackson, Miss., came back to grab the second 6-2 to force a decisive set.   The youngest NCAA Singles Champion ever then won a tight third set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(7).

Later Britton teamed with doubles partner Jordan Cox to capture the doubles title, downing Pierre Hugues Herbert (France) and Stanislav Poplavskyy (Ukraine) 6-3, 6-2 in the final.  The pair did not drop a set in any of their four matches played.

Saturday’s Wimbledon Junior will mark the third grand slam junior tournament for Britton, as he advanced to the final of the 2008 U.S. Open Junior and participated in the French Open Junior earlier this summer.

In addition to being the youngest ever to win the NCAA singles title, Britton also became the first Rebel freshman to earn All-America honors.  He earned All-SEC honors, made the SEC All-Freshman Team and was named the 2009 ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year.
