8/31/2009 | Soccer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After helping Ole Miss claim the championship of the Ole Miss Nike Invitational over the weekend, junior midfielder/forward Taylor Cunningham was named Southeastern Conference Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

It is the first weekly award for a Rebel this season and the first for Cunningham in her career.

A native of Louisville, Ky., Cunningham earned tournament MVP honors as her three goals and an assist helped the Rebels win both of their matches by a 9-0 total margin. She recorded her second career two-goal effort in a 3-0 win over 2008 NCAA Tournament squad Morehead State, scoring once in each half and firing off a game-high four shots.

She added a goal and an assist in a 6-0 win over Jackson State, the Rebels' largest margin of victory since 2004. She also helped the team out-shoot the Lady Tigers 35-1 with her five shots.

Through the season's first three matches, Cunningham is tied with freshman Arielle Cohen for the team lead with three goals and seven points.

Steve Holeman's squad will travel to Memphis and Southern Miss this upcoming weekend, before returning home for ETSU and UALR next weekend.
