Rebel Netters Have Successful First Day At ITA Southern Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team had a successful first day at the ITA Southern Regionals Friday, here at the UA Varsity Courts as four advanced to the third round in singles and two doubles teams reached the second round.
The top seed, Marcel Thiemann, had a first round bye and then downed Louisiana-Lafayette's Brandon Farine 6-2, 6-1. He will face Roger Anderson of LSU Saturday in the third round.
Senior Tucker Vorster, the tournament's fifth seed, also had a bye before defeating Alex Sanjonz (Samford) 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. He will meet Chris Helliar (UAB) next.
Sophomore Jonas Lutjen cruised by Elliot Minvielle in the second round after a bye, 6-2, 6-2, and will play Zach White of Mississippi State in the third round. Junior Chris Thiemann rounded out the singles winners on day one, topping Igor Santos (Jacksonville State) 6-2, 6-2 setting up a third-round meeting against Tom Knights (LSU).
In doubles, the top seeded duo of Marcel and Chris Thiemann defeated Gustavo Holz and Nenad Marcec of Jacksonville State 8-4 in the second round. Vorster and Lutjen posted an 8-2 win over James Gardner and John Holliman of UAB.

Elliot Minvielle (ULL) 6-2, 6-2; Chris Thiemann (OM) def. Igor Santos (JSU) 6-2, 6-2; Tucker Vorster (OM) def. Alex Sanjonz (SAM) 6-4, 6-3; Carl Abalos (SAM) def. Adrian Forberg Skogeng (OM) 7-6(6), 6-7(4), 6-3.
DOUBLES
Second round -- Thiemann/Thiemann (OM) def. Gustavo Holz/Nenad Marcec (JSU) 8-4; Vorster/Lutjen (OM) def. James Gardner/John Holliman (UAB) 8-2 ; Hewitt/Stamchev (AUB) def. Forberg Skogeng/Durham (OM) 8-3.
