Rebel Netters Place Three In Quarters At ITA Southern Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team placed three players in the singles quarterfinals and one team in the doubles semifinals at the ITA Southern Regionals here Saturday at the UA Varsity Courts.
Ole Miss and LSU boast six of the final eight players in the singles. The Rebels are assured of at least one of the three quarterfinalists advancing to the semifinals, as senior Tucker Vorster and junior Chris Thiemann will face off in the quarterfinals Sunday at 9 a.m.
Vorster downed Carlin Murray of Louisiana-Lafayette 6-3, 6-3 in the third round, while Thiemann defeated LSU sophomore Olivier Borsos 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Vorster, ranked No. 58 in the nation, is seeking to advance to the semifinals at this event for the second year in a row.
Sophomore Jonas Lutjen upset fourth-seeded and 56th-ranked George Coupland of Mississippi State 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. Lutjen will face the No. 5 seed, Sebastian Carlsson of LSU in the quarterfinals.
Top-seeded Marcel Thiemann was knocked out in the third round by Auburn's Tim Hewitt 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles, top-seeded Marcel and Chris Thiemann advanced to the semifinals with two wins. In the third round, the 10th-ranked duo was taken to a tiebreaker with Tim Puetz and David Zimmermann of Auburn and dominated it 9-8(0). Later they took out Ricky Doverspike and Vikram Reddy of Alabama 8-5. They will face LSU's Sebastian Carlsson and Neal Skupksi in the semifinals Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Vorster and Lutjen defeated Jarryd Botha and Trey Walston (UA) 8-5 in the third round before losing a close 8-6 match to Auburn's Tim Hewitt and Alex Stamchev in the quarterfinals.
The winner of the singles and doubles will earn a spot in the ITA National Indoor in November to be held in New York.
