Rebels Win ITA Southern Regional Doubles Title

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Marcel and Chris Thiemann captured the ITA Southern Regional Doubles Championship here Sunday to earn a berth in the ITA National Indoor in November. Senior Tucker Vorster won both his singles matches to advance to Monday's final.
The Thiemann's lived up to their top seeding, taking out two top 20 teams on Sunday to win the title. The 10th-ranked duo defeated LSU's Sebastian Carlsson and Neal Skupski, ranked No. 16 nationally, 8-6 in the semifinals. When their final round opponent was determined to be Mississippi State's Artem Ilyushin and George Coupland, the two teams elected to play the final late Sunday afternoon, since all four players were done with singles competition. Marcel and Chris took out 11th-ranked Ilyushin and Coupland 8-3 to improve to 5-1 on the year.
"Marcel and Chris were really impressive today," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "They beat two good teams in Mississippi State and LSU. We are excited to be heading to the ITA National Indoor at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y."
In singles, the Rebels had three players in the quarterfinals, with Vorster having to play his teammate, Chris Thiemann. Vorster won 4-1, ret., to move on to the semifinals for the second year in a row. This time, he succeeded in advancing to the finals, with a straight set, 6-4, 6-2 win over LSU's Mark Bowtell. Vorster, ranked No. 53 in the nation, will face Auburn's Alex Stamchev, ranked No. 73, in the final Monday at 10 a.m.
Stamchev defeated Ole Miss' Jonas Lutjen 7-5, 6-2 in the other semifinal. Earlier in the day, Lutjen Sebastian Carlsson 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
"Tucker is really playing some excellent tennis right now," Chadwick said. "The LSU kid that he beat has improved a lot since last year. The final should be a great match. Alex is playing well too. Hopefully we can bring home another title."
