Tucker Vorster Wins ITA Southern Regional Singles Title
10/25/2010 | Men's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Ole Miss men's tennis senior Tucker Vorster defeated Auburn's Alex Stamchev in straight sets here Monday to capture the ITA Southern Regional singles title. The Rebels dominated the regional, winning both the singles and doubles.
Vorster and Stamchev were locked in a tight first set, before Vorster was finally able to break and win it 7-5. He never let Stamchev in the second set, dominating it 6-0 to win the title.
"In the first set I was a little nervous with it being my first time in the finals, but once I settled down everything went great," Vorster said. "I was playing too one-dimensional in the first set. Once I started varying my game and started mixing it up, I threw him off his rhythm.
"Physically, I was in great shape. We did a lot of good work with John (Simmons - strength coach), which is starting to pay off."
Assistant coach Toby Hansson was on hand for Vorster's win and heaped praise on the Pretoria, South Africa native.
"This is a great win for Tucker. He had an outstanding tournament. He raised his game throughout the tournament," Hansson said. "Tucker didn't lose a set the entire tournament and showed great poise on the big points in the final. He was able to play his best tennis in the second set. It was impressive."
With the win, Vorster earned a spot in the USTA/ITA National Indoor in November, joining teammates Marcel Thiemann and Chris Thiemann, who won the ITA Southern Regional Doubles Championship Sunday.
"It's exciting to be going to New York with my teammates, and we're looking forward to going up there and making some noise," Vorster said.
The National Indoor will be held at the famous USTA-Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., Nov. 4-7.
