OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Proving that history does repeat itself, the Dayton Flyers wiped out a 12-point deficit in the final eight minutes of regulation and defeated Ole Miss 78-71 in overtime Saturday.
The repeat followed last season's NIT semifinal win by the eventual tournament champion Flyers, 68-63, who were led by Chris Johnson's 22 points. This time, Johnson had 20 points including a layup at the buzzer as Dayton dominated the overtime frame.
Josh Parker and Josh Benson scored 18 and 10 points respectively, as the Flyers (3-0) wiped out a 63-51 deficit with a 14-2 run. Tied 65-65, Ole Miss guard Chris Warren had an opportunity to win it, but missed a three-point shot with seven seconds remaining.
Dayton took control in overtime, hitting 9-of-10 free throws and taking the lead for good, 71-69 on a layup by Juwan Staten with 52 seconds remaining. The Flyers limited Ole Miss to 2-of-19 from the field in the final eight minutes and in overtime.
The Rebels placed five players in double figures, led by Zach Graham with 16 points. Nick Williams scored 14 points, Dundrecous Nelson and Terrance Henry had 12 points apiece, while Warren added 11.
Ole Miss lost starting center Reginald Buckner to an ankle injury with 19:13 remaining. Dayton took a decisive advantage on the boards, especially in the comeback surge, by out rebounding the Rebels 51-35. Johnson had a game-high 11 rebounds for Dayton.
The Rebels compensated early by hitting 7-of-15 from three-point range in the first half. However, Ole Miss missed all 14 attempts from three-point range in the second half and overtime and shot only 28-of-68, 41 percent from the field.
Dayton finished 23-of-62, 37 percent from the field, but made up the difference at the free throw line, hitting 26-of-33, 79 percent. Johnson and Parker combined to hit 15-of-18, including seven straight during overtime.
The Rebels managed only 8-of-16 from the free throw line and missed five straight in the final eight minutes, aiding the Dayton comeback.
Ole Miss led 46-33 at halftime, racing to a 13-2 lead in the opening four minutes. The Rebels still led 63-51 on a Warren layup with 8:18 left. That set the stage for the Flyers to repeat history.
