CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 11 nationally ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team downed No. 19 Alabama 4-1 Saturday night in the backdraw of the ITA National Team Indoor at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Rebels will face No. 14 Louisville Sunday at 2 p.m. CT., in their final match of the tournament.
For the fourth straight match, the Rebels won the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead. Tucker Vorster and Jonas Lütjen downed Ricky Doverspike and Michael Davis 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Alabama claimed the No. 2 match 8-5, and then the freshman duo of Adrian Forberg Skogeng and Harry Fowler served out an 8-6 win against UA's Ian Chadwell and Michael Thompson at No. 3 for the point.
Marcel Thiemann, ranked No. 61 in the nation, gave the Rebels a 2-0 lead when he defeated 62nd-ranked Saketh Myneni 6-4, 6-1 in his third match at No. 1 singles.
Alabama answered with a win at No. 4 singles, as Jarryd Botha defeated Forberg Skogeng 6-3, 6-1 to make it 2-1. Fowler put Alabama in a 3-1 hole, with his straight set win (6-3, 6-2) over Houssam Yassine at No. 5 singles.
Moments later, Chris Thiemann finished off the Crimson Tide's Ian Chadwell 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to clinch the victory. Thiemann has now clinched three of the Rebels' five wins this season, and all ironically, have come against SEC teams. He also clinched 4-3 victories over Mississippi State in the River Hills Mississippi Cup and Arkansas in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
"This was a good win to get, especially after a close loss to Georgia in the first round," head coach Billy Chadwick said. We played well in doubles and in singles. Adrian was not 100 percent, so we knew he would struggle in singles, but he played good in doubles. Marcel, Chris and Harry all came up with solid wins, and we were coming back at two and three. It was a great effort top to bottom."
The Rebels have now played four SEC teams in their first six matches, and are 3-1, with their only loss being to Georgia in a close 4-3 encounter on Friday.
