Women's Tennis Shuts Out Texas Tech

2/21/2010 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 22 nationally ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team remained perfect at home this season, shutting out Texas Tech 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center. With their second consecutive shutout, the Rebels improved to 4-1 on the season.

Ole Miss won the doubles point for the fifth straight match to take the early 1-0 lead. Connor Vogel and Gabby Rangel dominated at No. 2, 8-1, and Abby Guthrie and Laura van de Stroet cruised at No. 3, 8-2 to clinch the point.

Sophomore Kristi Boxx, ranked No. 30 in the nation, remained undefeated at No.1 singles, downing Lady Raider Sandra Dynka 6-3, 6-2 to make it 2-0 Ole Miss. Junior Karen Nijssen increased the lead to 3-0 winning a second set tiebreaker for a 6-3, 7-6(2) victory against TT's Elizabeth Ullathorne at No. 2 singles.

Sophomore Abby Guthrie clinched the team victory for the Rebels, coming back to beat Natalie Leitch 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

"I thought we played really well in doubles," head coach Mark Beyers said. "We were aggressive, and I thought we really never let them in. In singles, I thought we played well at times, but there were some lapses of concentration. That's something we can't afford to do against top teams.

"Maybe after the doubles, we felt like we were going to run away with it. But these guys tested us in singles. We need to be a little bit better as far as not having so many ups-and-downs in concentration."

Connor Vogel topped Kelsy Garland 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, Laura van de Stroet defeated Caroline Starck 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5, and Gabby Rangel handed Lorena Aviles a 6-0, 6-3 loss at No. 6 to complete the sweep.

"Now we move outside, so hopefully the weather will cooperate a little bit," Beyers said. We have to get ready for outdoor tennis and really get a lot of practice outside. We'll take it one match at a time."

The Rebels will be back in action Sunday, Feb. 28 against Middle Tennessee. The match is scheduled to be played at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center at 2 p.m., weather permitting.
