Women's Tennis Clinches SEC Tournament Bye

4/17/2010 | Women's Tennis

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The 17th-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team downed Mississippi State 4-0 Saturday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre to clinch a first round bye in the SEC Tournament and their best league record (8-3) since 2000.

This marks the first time since 2000 for the Rebels to earn a first round bye in the SEC Tournament. As a result of Tennessee's win over Georgia, Ole Miss earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament behind overall SEC Champion Florida.

"We got on them early in doubles and never let up, winning five of the first sets in singles. We made it tough for them to get in the match," head coach Mark Beyers said. "We are very proud of the girls for accomplishing another one of our goals and earning a first round bye. Now we look forward to going to the SEC Tournament and making some noise."

It didn't take long for the Rebels to jump on the Bulldogs, winning all three doubles matches with a combined game score of 24-6. Abby Guthrie and Laura van de Stroet won their match 8-1 to finish 10-1 in the SEC at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Ole Miss won five of the first sets to keep State from getting into the match. Guthrie dominated Mariia Ryzhova 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 and then van de Stroet cruised 6-2, 6-2 against Valeriya Makarycheva at No. 5 to put Ole Miss up 3-0. van de Stroet , the reigning SEC Player of the Week, finished 9-2 in the SEC.

Sophomore Gabby Rangel clinched the team's 21st straight victory against State, topping Danielle Terpko 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

The rest of the matches were suspended once Ole Miss had clinched the victory.

The Rebels will face the winner of the Arkansas/Auburn match Friday at 1 p.m. CT.
