Freshman Leads Ole Miss At Home Tournament
4/2/2010 | Women's Golf
OXFORD, Miss. - Led by freshman Haley Sanders, the Ole Miss women's golf team shot a 294 in the first round of the Rebel Intercollegiate Friday and stands tied for third at the Ole Miss Golf Course.
Sanders, a native of Rogers, Ark., fired a 2-under 70 and is tied for first in the individual standings with Tulane's Linn Gustafsson and Missouri's Julia Potter. Sanders came into No. 11 at +2 for the day, with one birdie on the front nine. She birdied 11 and then went on to birdie 14, 16 and 18 to close strong.
Senior Sara Grantham and sophomore Haley Millsap both shot 73, and junior Jillian Brodd carded a 78 to round out the scoring. Natalie Gleadall had an 81, which didn't count in the team score. Sophomore Ashley Lance turned in a 73 playing as an individual.
Tulane posted a 290 and leads East Tennessee State (292) by two shots. Ole Miss and Missouri are tied for third at 294, and Texas A&M rounds out the top five at 298.
"We are proud of the way we played today. We have put ourselves in a nice position after the first round," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "The team did a great job of focusing this morning, and we battled and managed the golf course well today. Haley Sanders turned in a great round of golf, rolling in five birdies. She has really matured this spring and is learning a little more about herself every day, which is fun to watch. Haley Millsap and Sara Grantham also played very solid for us today too.":
The second round will tee off beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday. The tournament is open to the public, and admission is free. For those fans not able to attend you can follow live scoring of the tournament by going to www.OleMissSports.com and clicking on the link in the Rebel Hub.
"This is our one opportunity to play at home, and we had a nice crowd come out today to watch us play. We are looking forward to a fun weekend, and we hope to more spectators over the weekend."
