Boxx Wins Again, Nets All-America Honors
5/27/2010 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. - Ole Miss sophomore Kristi Boxx reached the third round of the NCAA Singles Championship Thursday with a straight set win over Kristy Frilling (9-16 seed) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, and in the process, became the eighth All-American in the history of the women's tennis program.
Boxx needed three sets to advance on Wednesday, but in the second round the Grenada, Miss., native wasted little time getting on top of Frilling and never let up, winning 6-2, 6-4. Frilling came into the match ranked No. 16 in the nation, while Boxx is ranked No. 44.
A two-time All-SEC first team honoree, Boxx becomes the second Mississippi native to earn All-America laurels for the women's tennis team, joining three-time All-American Courtney Chapman (Jackson).
In the third round, Boxx will face the nation's No. 4 ranked player and No. 4 seed, Hillary Barte, who just days ago helped her team win the National Championship.
Later in the day, Boxx teamed up with Karen Nijssen to post a straight set win in the first round of doubles. The Reb duo defeated the Wake Forest team of Sasha Kulikova and Kathrun Talbert 7-5, 6-4.
Boxx and Nijssen will face the Georgia tandem of Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist (5-8 seed) Friday in the second round.
