Rebel Golfers In Position To Advance To NCAA Finals

5/7/2010 | Women's Golf

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Ole Miss women's golf team was greeted with tougher conditions on day two of the NCAA Central Regional, but still sits in a tie for eighth heading into the final round.

The Rebels were among the morning wave and benefited from the early tee time, that is until the wind started to blow. According to head coach Michele Drinkard, it blew upwards up 30mph at times. The team finished Thursday's round with a 319 and stands in a T8th (626) heading into the final round Saturday, just three out of the top five.

The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA Finals in Wilmington, N.C. May 18-21.

"Wow what a tough test of golf this morning," Drinkard said. "We knew the wind was going to blow, it was just a question of what time it was going to start. We played about five to seven holes before it started to gradually pick up. By the time we finished it had to be about 25 to 30 mph I am guessing."

Conditions made par a great score. Sophomores Haley Millsap and Natalie Gleadall posted the lowest scores of the day for the Rebels, both with a 77. There were some highlights on the day, coming from Gleadall. On No. 17 (her 8th hole) she hit her 52 degree wedge on the green and one hopped it in the hole for eagle. Later she also chipped in on No. 3, a par 3, for birdie.

"The team did a great job of staying in the moment and sticking to their process, it was just tough to make pars on the last nine holes," Drinkard said. "We have committed to our goal of taking care of what we control, and that is ourselves."

Southern California overtook top-seeded Arizona State for the lead with a second-round 302, which was the low round of the day. Lizette Salas of USC turned in a 3-under 69 and leads all individuals.
