NEW YORK -

Ole Miss star Terrico White, who declared for the draft after his sophomore season, was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the second round (36th overall pick) of the 2010 NBA Draft on Thursday night.

The 6-foot-5, 213-pound athlete with tremendous leaping ability is the first Rebel to be drafted since 2004, when Justin Reed went in the second round (40th overall) to the Boston Celtics.

"I'm just happy to be chosen," White said. "I'm going to come in and work extremely hard. I think I fit in good with (the Pistons)."

In two seasons with the Rebels, the Memphis native scored 955 career points and averaged 14.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. In his debut season, he earned SEC Freshman of the Year and Freshman All-America honors when he took over point guard duties for the injured Chris Warren league play and posted 18.4 points per SEC game.

This past season, White averaged 15.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game and helped the Rebels win the Southeastern Conference Western Division title and advance to the NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden.

White spent the summer of 2009 with Team USA, helping the Americans to a gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Championships in New Zealand.

He is the fourth-highest draft pick in Ole Miss history behind Gerald Glass (20th overall, 1990), John Stroud (27th, 1980) and Ansu Sesay (30th, 1998).

Possessing a gift for scoring from outside and the athleticism to fly high to the rim, White ranks 10th in Ole Miss history with 123 career 3-pointers and boasted the best vertical jump (40 inches) of any player in last month's pre-draft combine.
