Kirui, Smith Selected To SEC Community Service Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss track and field members Barnabas Kirui and Juliana Smith were both selected to the 2010 SEC Community Service Team, the conference office announced Tuesday.
The SEC Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to the community in superior service efforts.
The 2009 SEC Cross Country champion, Kirui is also an active member of SAAC and assisted with National Student-Athlete Day. A native of Litein, Kenya, Kirui developed the "Rebel Reruns" program, which is now in its second year of existence.
The Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Council established the "Rebel Reruns" service project in 2008, and with the help of fans, Ole Miss athletes and visiting teams, SAAC has sent more than 325 pairs of shoes to Kenya over the past two years.
Kirui also participated in both the SEC Canned Food Drive and Reading with the Rebels. In addition, Kirui donated his time to take part in the Disability Volunteer program, where he took notes in class for students suffering from disabilities that prevented them from doing so.
He was also part of the Cultural Exchange Program, which is a project in which students adopt a foreign exchange student in his or her first semester on campus. The goal of the program is to help those students have a seamless transition into college and to the United States and its culture.
A junior thrower from Loganville, Ga., Smith serves as the president for both the Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the M-Club. She helped coordinate Movie Night for SAAC and is also an active participant in "Rebel Reruns".
Smith was a member of the planning committee for the National Student-Athlete Banquet at Ole Miss and a member of the Ole Miss student mascot selection committee.
In addition, Smith took part in Reading with the Rebels and coordinated the SEC Canned Food Drive.
