Rebel Netters Named ITA Scholar-Athletes

OXFORD, Miss. - Rising juniors Marcel Thiemann and Chris Thiemann and upcoming sophomore Adrian Forberg Skogeng of the 2010 SEC West Champion Ole Miss men's tennis team were named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year.
"We're extremely proud of Chris, Marcel and Adrian. They lead the way for student-athletes, demonstrating that you can be successful on the court as well as in the classroom," head coach Billy Chadwick said.
Marcel, who posted a 3.55 grade point average last year, is one of only five players in the nation to earn All-America honors and be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete. The Lehrte, Germany native had an excellent sophomore campaign, becoming the 25th All-American in the history of the program and advancing to the NCAA singles quarterfinals. Thiemann made the jump to No. 1 singles after playing No. 6 as a freshman and ended the year ranked No. 19 in the nation.
Chris, who registered a 3.66 GPA for the year, teamed up with his brother to achieve a final national ranking of No. 24 in doubles. The pair participated in the NCAA Doubles Championship and went 10-1 in the SEC playing No. 1. Chris clinched six of the Rebels' wins, including the victory against Alabama that clinched the team's ninth straight SEC West title.
One of three freshmen in the lineup in 2010, Forberg Skogeng enjoyed an excellent year on and off the courts. The Oslo, Norway native boasted a perfect 4.0 GPA and posted a 24-9 overall record.
The three were instrumental in the Rebels claiming the Chancellor's Cup (varsity team with the highest GPA) for the seventh straight year.
To be eligible for ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.50 or higher for the year.
