SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Ole Miss suffered its second defeat of the season on Friday, as the Rebels dropped their first match at the Inn at Saint Mary's Soccer Classic 2-0 to undefeated Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders (5-0) scored two quick goals in the first 23 minutes, and the Rebels (1-2-1) were unable to mount a comeback despite holding the opponent scoreless for the rest of the match.
"Give credit to Texas Tech, who came in well organized and started the game with a high level of intensity," said first-year Rebel head coach Matthew Mott. "We weren't able to match that in the first half. We got exposed and had a breakdown in the back that allowed the first goal. Once we were down we had to chase the game, which was difficult against a good opponent that was solid defensively."
Taylor Lytle put Texas Tech up 1-0 at the 4:23 mark for her fourth score of the season. Ole Miss fell into a 2-0 hole at the 22:21 mark when Dawn Ward gathered a ball off a rebound in the box for her third goal of the year.
Ole Miss held Texas Tech scoreless the rest of way, getting a nice contribution from freshman keeper Sarah Story, who saw her first career action in the second half and did not allow a goal. Junior Kendyl Mygatt also played lock-down defense against the Red Raiders.
"In the second half we were a little better and a little more dangerous," Mott said. But it was difficult to come back from being down 2-0. We've got some guys with some bumps and bruises that we've got to get healed up. We need to get re-focused and re-energized and get ready for a great Santa Clara team."
Ole Miss faces No. 8 Santa Clara at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday in South Bend.
