Ole Miss Student-Athletes Participate In Reading With The Rebels

OXFORD, Miss. - Members of several Ole Miss athletics teams recently took time out to visit three local elementary schools as part of Reading with the Rebels, in which student-athletes give back to the community through the Ole Miss Rebel Ready program.
A total of 106 Rebel student-athletes from a wide variety of sports read to and interacted with students at Bramlett Elementary, Oxford Elementary and First Baptist Church Preschool last week. Some of the Rebels read to whole classes, others led group discussions on books, and some read to students in need of one-on-one support.
"I am very proud of the turnout and participation of our student-athletes," said Ole Miss Rebel Ready Intern R. Steven Cox. "This says a lot about their character and awareness of their impact as a student-athlete on the Lafayette-Oxford-University community. This is a fulfilling experience for our student-athletes as well as the students in the class."
"I love interacting with the kids," said Rebel track and field junior Jasmine Williams. "Reading with the Rebels is a great way to give back to the community. The kids love it when we visit and they have lots of questions. My favorite question was `can you beat Dexter McCluster in the 100?'"
Through Rebel Ready, Ole Miss student-athletes stay actively involved in both the Oxford and University communities. In addition to Reading with the Rebels, student-athletes regularly participate in activities such as visiting patients in area hospitals, being mentors to elementary school students, visiting senior adults at local retirement centers, holding several "Meet the Rebels" days throughout the year, and giving numerous talks on subjects such as drug awareness and staying in school to area students.
