Ole Miss To Have Three In ITA All-American Qualifying

TULSA, Okla. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team will have three players in the ITA All-American qualifying tournament beginning Monday at the Case Tennis Center, as sophomore Johan Backstrom won both his matches Sunday to advance.

Backstrom won three matches this weekend to join teammates Chris Thiemann and Jonas Lutjen in the qualifying, which begins Monday.

In the final round of prequalifying, Backstrom downed Luke Marchese of Duke 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the qualifying tournament in his first appearance in the All-American Championships. On Saturday, Backstrom took out Florida sophomore Michael Alford in straight sets in the second round. He began the day Sunday with a 6-3, 7-6(3) win over Texas A&M's Daniel Brown. Backstrom will face Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley of Marquette in the first round of qualifying, Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Thiemann, ranked No. 68 in the nation, will meet Gijs Linders of Michigan State in the first round at 3:30 p.m., while Lutjen, ranked No.72 in the nation, plays Hernus Pieters of Georgia at 10:30 a.m.

All three players must win three rounds to join teammate Marcel Thiemann in the main draw. The main draw begins Thursday.
