Rebels Head To Birmingham For USTA/ITA Southern Regionals

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women's tennis team will be in Birmingham, Ala., this weekend for the USTA/ITA Southern Regionals hosted by Samford University at the Samford Tennis Center.
The tournament begins Friday and concludes Monday with the finals. The Southern Region includes schools from the states of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The winner of the singles and doubles events earns a spot in the ITA National Indoor in November.
The Rebels will send a strong contingent to Birmingham led by senior All-American Kristi Boxx, ranked No. 22 in the nation. She is the highest ranked player in the region
and made the finals in 2009 and the semifinals in 2010.
Another player looking to contend this weekend is sophomore Caroline Rohde-Moe, who owns an 8-2 record this fall. She comes in ranked No. 75 in the nation.
Joining those two in the field are seniors Abby Guthrie and Gabby Rangel and freshmen Julia Jones, Erin Stephens, Iris Verboven and Paige Keating.
Boxx and Guthrie, ranked No. 19 nationally, will try to win the title this year after reaching the finals last year.
"We've done well the last two years at this event, and we are looking forward to continuing that success this weekend," head coach Mark Beyers said.
In 2009, Boxx teamed up with former All-American Karen Nijssen to win the doubles title as well as make the finals in singles. In addition to Boxx and Guthrie reaching the doubles final last year, former two-time All-SEC honoree Connor Vogel advanced to the singles final.
