Lutjen Through To Quarters At USTA/ITA Southern Regional

AUBURN, Ala. - Ole Miss men's tennis junior Jonas Lutjen advanced to the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships Friday, while also teaming with sophomore Johan Backstrom to reach the third round in doubles.
Lutjen, ranked No. 72 in the nation, took out the No. 3 seed, LSU's Neal Skupski in straight sets. After winning a close first set 7-5, Lutjen dominated Skupski, ranked No. 39, in the second set 6-2 to reach the quarters at this event for the second year in a row. Lutjen will face another LSU player, Mark Bowtell, in the quarterfinals seeking to advance to the semifinals for the second straight year.
Earlier in the day, Lutjen handed Shaye Wali of Tulane a 7-5, 6-2 loss in the third round.
In doubles, Lutjen teamed up with Backstrom to post an 8-6 win against Paulo Alvarado and Inaki Belloso of Southern Miss.
In singles consolation, both Backstrom and Adrian Forberg Skogeng won both their matches to reach the third round.
Play continues tomorrow with doubles at 8:30 a.m. followed by singles at 10 a.m.
