Rebel Netters In To Semis At USTA/ITA Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. - Ole Miss will have a semifinalist in singles and doubles at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships for the second year in a row, as Jonas Lutjen advanced to the semifinals in singles and teamed with Johan Backstrom to reach the semis in doubles at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Lutjen took out another LSU player in the quarterfinals, downing Mark Bowtell 6-3, 6-1. He will face his third straight Tiger in the semifinals, Olivier Borsos, seeded 9-16, Sunday. Lutjen, ranked No. 72 in the nation, reached the semis of this tournament last year, before falling.
In the doubles, Lutjen and Backstrom shut out Auburn's Dan Chochrane and Dennis Lengsfeld, who were the third seed, 8-0. They will face Daniil Proskura and Carlos Taborga of Alabama in the semifinals Sunday.
"Jonas played great against Bowtell, after a great win over Neal Skupski on Friday," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "I am also really impressed with how they've played in doubles. The team we beat today, Cochrane played No. 1 doubles for them last year. The kid he plays with transferred from Baylor. He's good. That was a great win."
In consolation singles, Backstrom is through to the finals. He downed Hanno Bartsch of South Alabama 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16 and then got a walkover in his next two matches to reach the final.
