OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss women's golf is currently ranked No. 34 in the nation, and on Wednesday head coach Michele Drinkard bolstered the future by inking one of the top players in the class of 2012 in Katy, Texas native Abby Newton.

Newton, who is ranked No. 34 in the 2012 class by Golfweek, qualified for the 2011 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship as well as the U.S. Girls Junior Championship. In 2011, she posted three top 10 finishes in AJGA events, including runner up at the AJGA Savannah Quarters.

In addition, Newton owns several top five finishes on the Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT), including winning the 2010 TJGT Open event.

"Every time I watch Abby she continues to impress me with her game. She is quiet in nature but let's her game talk big," Drinkard said. "Abby has a lot of length in her game, and we look for her to come in next year and be ready to step up and play immediately. And of course like all our players, she is very strong academically."

Newton works with Tony Allen, head golf professional at Meadowbrook Farms Golf Club in Katy, Texas.

The daughter of Robert and Jennifer Newton, Abby is not only an accomplished golfer and an excellent student-athlete, but involved in her community as well. In addition to being a member of the National Honor Society, Newton is involved in the National Charity League, and Star Chapter (mother-daughter organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences).

Newton also considered LSU, TCU, Texas Tech, Texas-San Antonio, Baylor, Colorado State, Oklahoma State, South Carolina and SMU.
