OXOFRD, Miss. - The Ole Miss soccer team beat Mississippi State 2-0 on Saturday to claim the Magnolia Cup and the team looks to carry its play from that game into its home spring exhibition matches this weekend.

"Last week we took another step on the ladder to where we want to be," head coach Matt Mott said. "This weekend it's important to take another step. We are playing two good teams this weekend (Arkansas State and Tennessee-Martin)."

The Rebels downed the Bulldogs 2-0 Saturday in Jackson on goals from Alix Hildal and Erin Emerson. Hildal, who played defense in the fall, ended the year with six goals and 13 points, was moved to forward in the game joining Emerson.

"This game was a great chance to put Alix at forward with Erin," Mott said. "Alix did very well, created chances, had good movement and showed us she can be dangerous at forward. She and Erin played well together. Overall against Mississippi State, we played solid defensively and as a whole we were able to keep possession all over the field."

This weekend, Ole Miss will welcome Arkansas State, Samford and Tennessee-Martin to Oxford on Sunday. The Rebels will face Arkansas State at 9:30 a.m. and will play Tennessee-Martin at 3:45 p.m. All matches will be played at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium and admission is free.
