OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team shut out Auburn 4-0 here Sunday at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center to snap a three-match losing streak.

"It feels great to get a win," head coach Mark Beyers said. "Everybody always looks at it like 'oh you've lost three in a row,' but we played the No. 7, 16 and 27 teams in the nation. A lot of teams would go 0-3 in that stretch. We had our opportunities against Alabama, but it wasn't meant to be. It was a tough stretch the last five matches if you include Florida and South Carolina in that. When you lose three in a row, it does play in your mind, so I am proud of the girls for stepping up here and taking care of business against Auburn."

The Rebels (9-9, 3-7) won the doubles point for the first time since the South Carolina match to take the early 1-0 lead. Auburn didn't have enough players available, so the Rebels won the No. 3 match by default. Kristi Boxx and Abby Guthrie, ranked No. 23 in the nation, defeated Auburn's Plamena Kurteva and Jacqueline Kasler 8-4 at No. 1 to clinch the point.

Ole Miss won all six first sets in singles to jump on the Tigers early. Freshman Vivian Vlaar downed Tiger Taylor Cohen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 to make it 2-0, and then Guthrie finished off Maria Arechavaleta 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5, to increase the lead to 3-0.

The match ended when Boxx took care of business at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2 against Caroline Thornton.

"It's hard when you lose so many matches in a row to come out with confidence and play your game knowing that you need a win," Boxx said. "It's nice that we came out strong in doubles and won the point. That helped. From there we carried the momentum into singles. It looked like everybody was going to win if we had kept playing."

The Rebels will host arch-rival Mississippi State next Saturday at 11 a.m. as part of Grove Bowl Weekend. Ole Miss has won 21 straight against the Bulldogs.
