OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss soccer team wrapped up its spring season Saturday and second-year head coach Matt Mott said he wants his team to carry the momentum the team gained this spring into the fall.
Mott said he was pleased with how his team and players developed during the spring. The team played seven matches and the Rebels posted a 4-3 record with each of its losses coming by just one goal. In those seven games, Ole Miss outscored its opponents 11-3 including four shutout wins.
"We had a very good spring and were able to score a lot of goals and we didn't concede many," Mott said. "Spring is for the development of our players not results. Our focus was on individual improvement. All of our players got better and worked hard. As a result, we are stronger, faster and better with the ball. I hope we carry this momentum and energy into the fall."
Junior Alix Hildal, who was moved from center back to forward during the spring, led the team in goals and assists this spring. In addition, Mott said sophomore Mandy McCalla had a good spring in the midfield while senior Meredith Snow did a great job of leading the back line. Mott also said junior keeper Alley Ronaldi played very well and only allowed three goals in seven matches while posting four shutouts.
Ole Miss will open preseason camp for the 2011 season on August 3.
"We have a very large number of returners that will be back for us in the fall and those returners understand our system," Mott said.
