Rebel Netters Defeat Alabama 5-2 In Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Ole Miss men's tennis team gained a 5-2 win at Alabama Friday to begin their road trip. They will face No. 21 Auburn Sunday at 1 p.m.
With the win, the Rebels improved to 11-6 overall and 5-4 in the SEC. Mississippi State defeated Auburn 4-2 to remain one match ahead of the Rebels in the SEC West standings.
Ole Miss played its fourth straight match without senior Kalle Norberg in the lineup. Head coach Billy Chadwick switched up the doubles lineups at two and three, and it worked as the Rebels came away with the point. Jonas Lutjen and Tucker Vorster, who are 25-11 together since last year, defeated Vikram Reddy and Michael Thompson 8-4. After Alabama won the No. 3 match, the twins, Marcel Thiemann and Chris Thiemann, finished off an 8-5 win over Jarryd Botha and Ricky Doverspike at No.1 to clinch the point.
In singles, Marcel Thiemann, ranked No. 40 in the nation, made quick work of Doverspike at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2 to put the Rebels up 2-0.
With Norberg out of the lineup, Chris Thiemann ended up at No. 3 singles for the first time this year, where he lost 6-2, 6-3 to Botha to give the Crimson Tide a point.
Ole Miss picked up straight set wins at two and four to put away Alabama. Vorster rebounded from a tough final home weekend to post a 7-5, 6-3 win over UA's Daniil Proskura at No. 2 singles and then Lutjen topped Reddy by the same score to clinch the victory.
The two teams split the final two matches with Alabama winning at six and Ole Miss' Adrian Forberg Skogeng winning at five.
"This was a good win to get," Chadwick said. Road wins in the SEC are always tough to come by. We are glad to be 1-0 to start the trip and now we have to get ready to play a tough Auburn team at their place. It's another huge match if we want to have a chance to win the SEC West."
